Brian Chaney says he asked for a supervisor during his arrest in Keego Harbor, Michigan, and Police Officer Richard Lindquist told him that another officer present was in charge. The problem: That second officer was not a supervisor or even a member of the Keego Harbor Police Department. Lindquist no longer works for the Keego Harbor police and the AP was unable to reach him. “People hold police in high esteem,” said Robinson, who spent 13 years as a Detroit police officer. “Basically, I think police officers lie because they can,” Feldman said.

It has to do with “Hit Man,” a comedy Powell co-wrote with the director Richard Linklater that casts him as a hapless teacher who must pose as an assassin for hire. I first saw it at the Venice Film Festival in September, where it proved so crowd-pleasing that the audience broke into applause midway through the movie. A week later at the Toronto International Film Festival, the response was also through the roof. But for months, Powell had only heard about all that secondhand. Since the Screen Actors Guild strike was still going strong during the fall tests, Powell wasn’t able to attend a premiere of “Hit Man” until it played Monday night at the Sundance Film Festival.

MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) — International movie stars arrive in Morocco on Friday to kick off one of the Arab world's largest film festivals amid a shadow cast by Israel’s latest war with Hamas and protests that have swept the region for almost two months. The Marrakech International Film Festival, along with Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival that is scheduled to open next week, are taking place despite war in Gaza. That’s in contrast to the Cairo International Film Festival and Tunisia’s Carthage Film Festival, both of which were canceled due to the war. Scorsese will preside over the festival's Atlas Workshops — an initiative designed to screen films or films in progress by emerging Arab and Moroccan filmmakers. The festival is scheduled to run through Dec. 2.

China’s Problems Are Real

China’s economic problems can seem sudden and surprising. The real estate market is in a serious slump. Unemployment among young adults has surged above 20 percent — and the government has responded by suspending the release of that statistic. “The most terrifying thing is that everyone around me is at a loss of what to do next,” Richard Li, the owner of an auto parts business who has closed two of his four stores, told my colleague Li Yuan. My main argument is that China’s problems are not, in fact, new.

Chinese business owners and consumers told The New York Times they're concerned about the economy. China is dealing with declines in manufacturing and trade as well as record-high youth unemployment. Larry Summers said last week China's economic proespects had been "greatly exaggerated" in the past. Summers said China's economic prospects, previously considered very good, had been "greatly exaggerated," and that he think the US gross domestic product "will exceed China's for another generation." The Times reported consumers and business owners in China were worried because they could not see how the economic downturn would end.

‘Horseplay’ Review: Boys Will Be Boys

Boys will be boys, as the saying goes. There’s not a lot of forward momentum in “Horseplay,” directed by Marco Berger and set outside a city in Argentina. !” taken to extremes, both in its laid back pace but also in the consequences of its characters fooling around. The audience sees something roil in one member of the group, Poli (Franco de la Puente), as he gazes at some of the young men faking fellatio and playacting penetration. But everyone else is content to lounge in the cognitive dissonance of the blurry boundaries of their homosocial intimacy rituals.

HONG KONG, March 24 (Reuters) - Hong Kong's government announced a series of measures on Friday to attract wealthy family offices to set up in the financial hub as authorities try to restore business confidence and investor allure after three years of severe COVID-19 rules. "The policy statement demonstrates our determination to develop Hong Kong into a leading global family office hub," Paul Chan, the city's financial secretary said. Chan said this would help bolster Hong Kong's financial sector as well as areas including technology, green, arts and culture and philanthropy. City leader John Lee said last year that he had set a target of attracting 200 large family offices to set up in Hong Kong by 2025. Hong Kong's push to attract wealthy families comes as many wealthy individuals and companies shifted to rival financial hubs such as Singapore after Beijing's imposition of a national security law on Hong Kong in 2020.

Rapp, watching Spacey accept his prize, threw a pencil at the screen, he testified this week. Spacey’s lawyers have tried to convince the jury of six men and six women that Rapp fabricated his claim in large part because he was bitterly envious of their client's success. Rapp, they contend, desperately wanted Spacey’s career: the hit films, the plum roles, the two Oscars. But through the first five days of the trial in downtown Manhattan, Rapp’s alleged jealousy has been a recurring and striking theme. “I wanted my career.”Warrington Parker, a San Francisco trial attorney, and Danny Cevallos, an NBC News legal analyst, both described the jealousy argument as a high-risk bet for Spacey’s lawyers.

A pitch for a growing business in an under-penetrated market is different though. Growth will have been disrupted by the effect of pandemic lockdowns on the ability of Nirvana’s sales force to canvas for new business. That’s just above the rate cited by FWD for the Malaysian life insurance market and would be a more reasonable level. Bidders have entered a second round for the business, which specialises in selling pre-need premium products such as family plots in burial grounds. Nirvana Asia went public in Hong Kong in 2014.
